Astoria Software Poll Reveals Demand for Content Reuse and Adoption of DITA Standard

SAN MATEO, Calif. — November 3, 2006 — Driving efficiencies in dynamic publishing, Astoria Software today revealed demand for content reuse and adoption of the Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA) standard, as evidenced in a poll conducted during the recent Webinar, “Why Enterprises Must Adopt Content Re-use: How GE Healthcare Reduces Documentation Costs and Speeds Time to Market.” (see an instant replay of this webinar now)

C-level executives, information designers, developers, documentation specialists and technical writers attended the Webinar and responded to the following polling questions:

 1. What percentage of reuse do you think you have in your content? and
 2. What are your company’s plans for DITA adoption?
The results?
 • 41.5% of the poll respondents estimated they have 15% to 25% reuse in their content. 40.9% estimated they have 25% to 50% reuse, and 17.7% estimated they have greater than 50% reuse. Overall, 164 attendees responded to the content reuse question.
 • 46.4% of the poll respondents are investigating DITA, for use within their organizations, and 11.6% are currently implementing DITA. The rest either have no plans (24.9%) or are not sure of them (17.1%). In total, 181 attendees responded to the DITA query.
Featuring details of GE Healthcare’s Astoria implementation, the Webinar focused on reducing time-to-market and improving efficiencies with a single-source information model. The 232 live attendees also gained insights into dynamic publishing best practices and solutions adopted by Fortune 500 companies. The Webinar’s live polls revealed trends in content reuse and DITA adoption. Speakers included Jeannette Eichholz, manager of the Global User Ultrasound Writing Team at GE Healthcare; Ann Rockley, president of The Rockley Group, Inc.; and Chip Gettinger, vice president, services & support at Astoria Software.

Ann Rockley addressed the significance of content reuse as a significant factor impacting return on investment (ROI) from an organization’s content. The advantages of reuse, according to Rockley research, go beyond content creation and apply to content maintenance, content delivery, localization, quality, and time-to-market and opportunity costs.

GE Healthcare’s Jeannette Eichholz followed up Rockley’s findings with the benefits GE Healthcare has realized by working with a content management system that enables single sourcing and the maximum reuse of structured content. The GE Healthcare Ultrasound Division annually publishes information for numerous products and has successfully reduced translation costs and production cycles in order to go to market globally.

DITA is a new information standard established by OASIS, a non-profit consortium establishing global standards for e-business and structured content. Chip Gettinger of Astoria covered the benefits of adopting DITA for dynamic product documentation, including content future-proofing and integration.

“Content reuse and DITA are paving the way to higher content ROI,” said Gettinger. “What we’re seeing at GE Healthcare and elsewhere is that using the right systems to manage complex product documentation can drive bottom line savings, as well as top line revenue growth.”
