Join Scott Hudson in Santa Clara, California November 3–5, 2015  for the Optimizing the DITA Authoring Experience workshop.

The DITA standard is comprised of more than 530 elements. How does an author choose the appropriate elements to use when marking up structured content? What if DITA is still missing business or industry-specific elements that you need? There are several ways to reduce the complexity of DITA element and attribute use, but which ones are most effective? Companies often use editorial style guides to help authors, but how can you consistently enforce those rules, especially with limited editorial staff?

DITA offers a variety of ways to optimize your authoring experience, making it as simple as possible for your authors to create and publish content that conforms to your information model and authoring guidelines. In this workshop, you are guided through the process of customizing your authoring environment using each of the following technologies: shells, specializations, constraints, templates, subject scheme maps, and publishing scenarios. You are given specific design guidelines, along with a wealth of real-life examples to illustrate the principles. With ample time for applying what you have learned, you will leave the workshop with the necessary tools to optimize the authoring experience for your authoring team.

Optimizing the DITA Authoring Experience is a combination of conceptual and hands-on learning: students will be shown the DITA principles, best practices and then asked to perform exercises to practically apply and reinforce the learnings. You are required to bring a laptop computer and sample documents to complete exercises. Be prepared to learn how to complete various exercises using the oXygen XML Editor (a trial version of the oXygen XML Editor will be provided to attendees).
