JustSystems to Showcase Dynamic Documents and DITA at DocTrain West 2008

Company to Speak on Making the Business Case for DITA Adoption; Hands-on Workshop Highlights DITA Authoring, Publishing with XMetaL

VANCOUVER and NEW YORKApril 22, 2008 JustSystems, the largest independent software vendor in Japan and a worldwide leader in XML and information management technologies, today announced it will be showcasing the power of DITA united with its “document as application” vision and dynamic documents at DocTrain West 2008 to be held May 6–9, 2008, at the Marriott Pinnacle Hotel in Vancouver, British Columbia. A silver sponsor of the show, JustSystems will also be speaking and exhibiting.

In “Understanding and Communicating the Financial Impact of XML and DITA,” Jeff Deskins, principal consultant for JustSystems, will show attendees how to make a compelling case for adopting DITA. Attendees will discover how to calculate the cost of their current processes, and determine the potential savings with new technology for authoring, re-use automation, localization, review, and publishing. Those ROI calculations can then be used in budget requests and business cases to senior executives, to set expectations with the team and stakeholders for future XML adoption, and to track project success.

Attendees will learn how to:

  • Quantify and calculate savings in authoring, localization, reviewing, and publishing;
  • Build a business case for DITA, including sample scenarios and calculations;
  • Communicate proposed savings to senior executives;
  • Save 20 - 40% on authoring, 25-50% on localization costs, and over 50% on existing publishing costs; and
  • Explain how DITA adoption supports enterprise initiatives.

Understanding and Communicating the Financial Impact of XML and DITA” is targeted to attendees of all experience levels and will be held Wednesday, May 7, 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. in the Shaughnessy II Room.

In “DITA Authoring and Publishing with XMetaL,” Alan Houser, president of Group Wellesley, Inc., will lead a 3.5-hour, hands-on workshop for attendees that reviews basic DITA concepts and DITA mark-up while working with XMetaL, the structured authoring and content collaboration software from JustSystems. A laptop computer running Windows XP or Windows Vista is required for the session, and workshop participants will receive a trial version of XMetaL Author Enterprise.

After getting an overview of the XMetaL authoring interface, workshop participants will learn how to:

  • Create and modify DITA topics in XMetaL;,
  • Set and use DITA filtering attributes for maintaining and publishing customized content;
  • Create and use reusable content components (DITA conrefs);
  • Create links to other topics and external resources (e.g., URLs);
  • Work with the XMetaL map editor to specify topic collections;
  • Publish DITA content from XMetaL; and
  • Work with DITA specializations in XMetaL.

“DITA Authoring and Publishing with XMetaL” is targeted to attendees with intermediate-level experience and will be held Friday, May 9, 1:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. in the Point Grey Room.

Dynamic Docs at DocTrain

In its booth on the show floor, JustSystems will be promoting “the document as the application,” its unique vision for the future of information creation, collaboration, and delivery. This vision blurs the line between traditional documents, which provide rich context, persistence and portability; and business applications, which provide live data and an interactive user experience. The result is a dynamic document that comes to life with diverse and distributed information sources that are always up to date. In turn, users get a real-time, interactive, fully contextual view of their business.

Based on JustSystems’ XMetaL and xfy (pronounced “x-fie”) product lines, dynamic document capabilities have transformative potential for document-centric business processes in financial services, manufacturing, life sciences, and other industries where data constantly changes, and where working with out-of-date and out-of-context information carries a high price.

For documents that are key to business operations – policies, procedures, technical manuals, etc. – dynamic documents use technologies such as XML-based authoring and publishing tools to connect to live data and become dynamic and interactive. Rather than creating static documents and then updating them with different versions, a dynamic document incorporates live, real-time data that’s always up to date and tailored to each end-user.
