InsideOut Issue 3 - Quality content conversion for demanding publishing environments

Putting conversion quality to the test
----------------------------------------------------------

How do you define quality in content conversion?  Is it only about the output? Or do the performance, speed and reliability of the process matter too?  In the latest issue of InsideOut, Stilo put its leading OmniMark content processing solution to the test to see how it would stand up against the DITA Open Toolkit in demanding publishing environments.

The quality and robustness of OmniMark in high-volume publishing environments has recently been proven in a technical benchmarking exercise, conducted by Stilo.  In this trial, OmniMark was used to develop an application for converting DITA documentation into HTML.  Dubbed the DITA Accelerator, this application was then tested against the DITA Open Toolkit with the focus on seeing how well each performed when managing large volumes of files and large file sizes.  In every test, the DITA Accelerator outperformed the DITA Open Toolkit.  While the Toolkit was able to cope with smaller volumes and file sizes, when these were increased it got gradually slower and then ran out of memory, whereas OmniMark carried on converting high volumes of large files with ease, cutting hours out of the process.

The trial served as an excellent example of how OmniMark improves the quality of document conversion processes through its exceptional performance and scalability, making it a particularly attractive tool of choice for organizations with demanding publishing environments.
